i-system. The implant.
i-system. The implant.
Plateau anchor geometry
i-system implants combine special macro- and micro-design features that allow the implant length to be reduced to a minimum. This is based on their special plateau anchor geometry, which has been consistently further developed from the original implant design by Thomas Driskell.
From a biological perspective, every implant is also a kind of foreign body that impairs blood flow and bone nutrition. Therefore, it is fundamentally a biological advantage to reduce this "foreign body" to the necessary minimum. The shorter an implant is, the better the network of blood vessels in the bone is preserved. This directly results in optimized oxygen supply to the peri-implant bone tissue, particularly in the crestal region. Oxygen is the most effective antidote to all anaerobic bacteria and thus also the most effective agent against peri-implantitis.
The use of short and ultra-short implants is therefore not only a question of the available bone, but rather a biological consequence for all indications.
3. Widely extending plateaus lead to a significant increase in the bone-to-implant contact area.
4. Optimized biomechanics:
The plateaus transform the typically present horizontal force vectors into vertical force vectors that have no gradient towards the pivot point. Thus, the entire implant surface is used uniformly for load application.
5. Haversian bone between the plateaus:
Bone regeneration occurs via callus formation, as direct contact between the implant body and the osteotomy walls is avoided during implant insertion. Surgical stabilization is achieved via the outer edges of the plateaus and the integrated longitudinal grooves.
6. A short implant length ensures optimal peri-implant blood flow and oxygen supply to the bone, especially in the crestal area. This effectively reduces the risk of peri-implantitis.
1. The self-locking, steep conical connection can transmit high forces and requires no screw connection. It exhibits no micromovement and therefore has no bacterial pumping effect:
The implant can be safely placed subcrestally.
2. The shape follows nature:
The implant is designed to be narrow in the neck area,
precisely where the bone is thinnest.
Locking Taper Conical Connection
The extremely precise manufacturing process, with a maximum permissible manufacturing tolerance of 0.005 mm, guarantees a perfect fit of the conical stem within the implant. Depending on the implant, this cone angle is 1.5° for 2.0 and 3.0 well implants and 1.3° for 2.5 well implants.
The retention mechanism of the abutment in the implant is based on the physical phenomenon of cold welding:
"Due to the intensive contact of two highly tempered metal surfaces under pressure, a large number of the metal atoms at the two interfaces touch, and the attractive forces of the electrons in the outer orbits connect them to form a stable atomic lattice."
Cold welding can be easily undone at any time, as it is created purely at the atomic level.
• No screws required
• No micromovements
• 360° free positioning of the abutment within the implant
• Absolutely bacteria-tight, no bacterial microleakage
• Implant-abutment connection can be located within the bone
• The 3 mm deep conical interface between implant and abutment ensures a secure hold of the abutment within the implant
Sloping shoulder
the i-system follows the transverse contour of the alveolar bone, featuring a tapered shoulder ("sloping shoulder") in the implant neck area: the i-system is narrowest where the alveolar bone is also narrowest. This eliminates the bone edges that taper towards the crest, as is unavoidable with a cylindrical implant geometry. The crestal bone and its nourishing vessels have more space, crestal bone loss is effectively minimized, and the conditions that promote peri-implantitis are effectively eliminated.
At the same time, the i-system design increases the distance between the implant shoulder and the adjacent teeth and implants, thus enabling the treatment of even narrower gaps without compromising the soft tissue contour. This biological effect is further enhanced by the mathematical modification of the abutment's simple hemisphere into an elliptical shape, which provides significantly more circular space for the soft tissue.
Sloping shoulder and elliptosphere together enable better preservation of the bone and papilla between implant and tooth or between two adjacent implants.

i-mimetic Surface
The i-mimetic surface of i-system implants is moderately rough. It is created by blasting the titanium surface with calcium phosphate particles, which are precisely defined and selected beforehand. Calcium phosphate is biocompatible, osteoconductive, and resorbable. i-system implants undergo a series of cleaning processes both before and after blasting, so that after the surface treatment, a calculated 30-40% of the surface is covered with calcium phosphate particles. Due to its osteoconductive properties, the osseointegration of the implant is significantly improved in the initial phase, with calcium phosphate being completely resorbed by the body within the first three months.
The use of medium-rough surfaces, compared to rough surfaces, sustainably prevents the incidence of peri-implantitis, both in the initial phase and in the medium and long term.
To protect this surface from contamination or mechanical damage, the implant is securely stored in a tube made of medical-grade PEEK. Medical-grade PEEK is itself a material used for implants in other areas of general surgery (e.g., spinal surgery) and is therefore the highest quality packaging material available on the market. This ensures that neither the packaging process, nor transport, nor removal during implantation will damage or contaminate the i-mimetic surface.
We had the purity of the i-mimetic surface tested by the CleanImplant Foundation : our i-system implants received an "excellent result". Since July 2019, i-system implants have held the "CleanImplant Listed Implants 2019" status from the CleanImplant Foundation .
